DERBY

An Introduction

Derby is located on King sound near the mouth of the Fitzroy River. The town was gazetted in 1883 and was the first town to be settled in the Kimberley. As a service town for the pastoral, mining and tourism industries and Aboriginal communities, Derby offers a variety of services and is the gateway to the magnificent coastline of the Buccaneer Archipelago and the gorges of the Gibb River Road.

Derby is ideally located for exploration of the fascinating Devonian Reef Gorges of Windjana and Tunnel Creek and further into the King Leopold Ranges, Bell Gorge, Dimond and Sir John Gorges.

With the highest tides in Australia, up to 12m, a visit to Derby is not complete without seeing high and low tide at the Jetty.

Derby is located 220kms north east of Broome and is linked by a sealed highway.
