FITZROY CROSSING

An Introduction

Fitzroy Crossing is situated on the sealed Great Northern Highway 391kms east of Broome, and 641kms west of Kununurra.

Fitzroy Crossing is located on the banks of one of the largest rivers in Australia with a catchment of 90,000 square kilometres. Just north of the townsite the tributaries of the Leopold and Margaret/Mary Rivers join the Fitzroy River before continuing on its journey to King Sound and the Indian Ocean.

In the dry season billabongs make great recreational areas while the magnificent Geikie Gorge is a 'must see'for visitors. In the wet season the river's brown and swirling waters can rise 13 metres above the old concrete crossing and have an estimated flow rate of 30,000 cubic metres per second.

The Fitzroy Valley contains some of the best cattle country in the Kimberley and attracted early pastoralists such as the MacDonald Brothers. They endured great losses and hardships before arriving at the junction of the Fitzroy and Margaret Rivers with 340 cattle and horses and recording it thus - "arrived here June 3rd 1885, and called it "Fossil Downs".

Fitzroy Crossing was the base for the search for the famous Aboriginal outlaw Pigeon (Jandamara) and his gang at the end of the last century. The founder of the Crossing Inn played a major role in the last scene of Pigeon's life.

Some of the attractions include Geikie Gorge National Park, Crossing Inn, Original Townsite and the Pioneer Cemetery.
